SCHOOL WIDE CHALLENGE – MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

On Friday, October 12th, Cambridge Elementary held its first Challenge of the year and the process was amazing. Students brought in all sorts of recycled and reused items and then set about to work in groups or individually to develop a musical instrument.  The school was alive with creative chatter and problem solving in the morning, and then students got a chance to participate in a gallery walk around the school to see what other creative instruments different grade classes and grade levels created. Thank you to all of the parents/guardians who supported this important learning activity.

Walk/Roll to School Week (October 15-18, 2017) is a City of Surrey initiative and many IMG_20181014_172847elementary schools across the district are to participating. All Cambridge Elementary students are encouraged to walk, cycle, or scooter to school with friends & families all week since the weather is going to be magnificent. We are having a friendly competition all week with Goldstone Elementary (a neighbouring school with about the same number of students) to see who can reach the end of the week with the highest number of students actively making their way to school each morning and proudly claim the “Golden Shoes Trophy“. Each classroom will keep a tally and each day we will share our results.

Cambridge Elementary Walking School Bus
When:  October 17th, 2018   8:00AM
Where: Louie Tong YMCA Parking Lot

As part of the City of Surrey’s Walk and Roll to School Week, Cambridge Elementary will be taking part in a Walking School Bus.  What is a Walking School Bus?  A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with one or more adults. If that sounds simple, it is, and that’s part of the beauty of the walking school bus. It can be as informal as two families taking turns walking their children to school to as structured as a route with meeting points, a timetable and a regularly rotated schedule of trained volunteers.

Cambridge Elementary, City of Surrey, RCMP, and ICBC will be leading a Walking School Bus on October 17th and we invite all Cambridge Elementary Students and Parents to participate.  We will be departing from the Tong Louie YMCA at 8:00 AM and will take a 15 minute walk to school.  Please feel free to join the walking school bus anywhere along the route.  Once at Cambridge, there will be members of the RCMP, ICBC, and City of Surrey Staff present to answer all of your school travel questions.  This will be a rain or shine event, so please dress for the weather!

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING PARENT PRESENTATION

At the October 10th PAC meeting. Ms. McBride shared a presentation titled, Social Emotional Learning – Educating the Heart. It focused on providing parents with an understanding of what Social and Emotional learning is, why it is important, what the connections to Cambridge Elementary are, and how it can be supported at home. The following slides are from her presentation.

One of the programs used at Cambridge to support Social and Emotional learning in the classroom is the Zones of Regulation. It teaches students coping and self regulation skills so they can help themselves when they are anxious, upset, stressed, sad, etc.
