VIDEO THROWBACK…A LOOK BACK AT TERM 1 (LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR)
BACK TO “IN THIS ISSUE”
This coming Wednesday, February 24, we celebrate learning and we celebrate the world of SCIENCE. Based on specific criteria, several projects from each intermediate class have selected to be viewed by external judges. The top five projects will be selected to represent Cambridge at the District Science Fair next Thursday, March 3 and Central City Mall. The gym will be open after school on Wednesday until 5:30 p.m. to give parents an opportunity to view projects. We hope to see you there!
A FOCUS ON COMPETENCIES: PERSONAL AWARENESS AND RESPONSIBILITY
If you read this blog often, then you will have heard much about B.C.’s new curriculum and the focus on developing core competencies. One such competency, Personal Awareness and Responsibility, was on display this past week at Cambridge. According to the Ministry of Education,
This competency is further broken down into:
Student-led conferences gave students the opportunity to develop this competency by encouraging them to reflect on their learning, celebrate successes, set goals for the future, and carry out plans to meet these goals. Students also have ongoing opportunities to become increasingly reflective and personally aware. In one class, students were encouraged to think about what their ONE WORD would be for 2016. In other words, students not only looked at themselves closely and shared what they would like to personally focus on in the coming year, but they also shared why the word was relevant to them.
“My word for the New Year is CARE. I want to always be a caring person. I care for people who get hurt. I care for my family…When I am a caring person I feel good and am proud of me.”
“CHALLENGE is my special one word…I can work harder, take more risks, try new things…when you challenge yourself there is never an end.”
“HELPFUL is a good word for me. First I will be helpful to myself by being happy and not worry so much.”
“KINDNESS is my word for the New Year…When I am kind good things come back to me. So my word is a gift to me.”
Such thoughtful and mature words from young learners! So…what would your ONE WORD be for 2016? Why?
Moving forward, as teachers communicate student learning to parents, you will continue to hear more about this competency, as well as other core competencies including communication, creative and critical thinking, positive personal and cultural identity, and social responsibility. And the best thing about this new competency-driven curriculum is that it is developmental in nature and aligns with a growth mindset. “When students and educators have a growth mindset, they understand that intelligence can be developed. Students focus on improvement instead of worrying about how smart they are.”
We can all learn and with effort, we can all further develop these competencies within ourselves.
SCHOOL LOGO: GET YOUR DESIGN ON!!!
The Cambridge Community has voted to keep the nickname “COMETS” and to re-design our exisiting logo. Students you are invited to provide inspiration for this new school logo. Logo ideas will be accepted up to Friday, March 4th. Ideas will be shared with the whole community, then “cleaned up” by a graphic designer.
